Meet John

Dr. John Knox Crooks, D.Min
2420 Weatherford Court
Marietta, Georgia 30068

Republican
Cobb County School Board, District 6

48 years old, native of Cobb County

I am a minister at Roswell Street Baptist Church and I serve as the Church Administrator.

I am married to Dr. Cheryl Crooks, the Science Division Head and a teacher in the Magnet Program at Wheeler High School.  We have been married for 21 years.

Son, Patrick, a recent 2006 graduate from Wheeler High School will be attending Piedmont College in the Fall of 2006.

Daughter, Bethany, is a rising 8th grader at East Cobb Middle School.

Education

High School: Marietta High School (1976)
College: Baptist College at Charleston, Charleston, South Carolina
Masters: New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary
Doctorate: Doctor of Ministry Degree with specialization in Leadership, New Orleans Theological Seminary (May, 2002)

What experience will help me do my job as a board member?

During my tenure as a board member, I will draw upon:

  • My educational experience

  • My community service experience

  • My voluntary leadership experience

  • My life-time community relationships

  • My inter-personal skills

What issue drew me into this race?

The issue which drew me into this race was, and still is, the lack of an "open and fair" governmental process.  Open and fair government is essential to the educational process.

Elected officials must remain accountable to the voters for their voting record.  When I entered this race in May of 2005, I observed the "open and fair" government process failing.  In my opinion, the board had detached itself from the public, doing instead, whatever it decided.  Frequently, the board was engaged in some controversial issue or found itself in court.  I became more and more frustrated so I entered the race in order to help restore trust and credibility to the board.

Children are our greatest resource and providing them with quality education is "job one!"  My vision for education in Cobb County includes an engaged Board of Education responding to the needs of their constituents.  Also, I envision a board doing whatever it takes to effectively communicate with every county tax payer about the board's educational agenda.  We must do a better job!

How would I achieve these goals?

I would immediately replace the current "Carver" governance model with a general "Georgia School Board" model connecting the board with the voters.  I would support any measure that would dramatically improve "communications" with the public as well.
